WB resurrects the ghoulish glee of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice

Admit it, you’ve missed your favorite horny, Zagnut-luring con-man corpse from the 1988 Tim Burton horror-comedy Beetlejuice. Well, today Warner Bros. says the mourning period is over with its planned reboot of Michael Keaton’s finest work (take that, Mr. Mom).

Deadline reports that David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith of KatzSmith Productions have signed a sweet two-year, first-look deal with Warner Bros. One of the first dream projects under that contract is a juicy Beetlejuice sequel. The lucrative deal developed out of Grahame-Smith’s screenplay gig for Tim Burton’s upcoming gothic soap opera Dark Shadows. Grahame-Smith rose to fame through his literary mashup novels Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, both of which have big-budget adaptations in the pipeline.

“We want to make big movies based on big ideas and inspired by the comedies we grew up loving,” writer Grahame-Smith told Deadline. “The thing we like about Bad Robot and Imagine is that they are never pigeonholed because they do good work across a broad spectrum. We want to slowly grow into a company that follows in those footsteps.”

With the original Beetlejuice, a young Tim Burton rocketed to fame with a cobwebbed confection starring a pre-Batman Michael Keaton in the title role and supported by a goofy cast including Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis and Winona Ryder. Beetlejuice is a fairly charismatic cadaver and perfect for resurrection in these supernaturally obsessed times. After all, he did live through the Black Plague and has seen The Exorcist about 167 times … and it keeps getting funnier every single time he sees it.

So say it once, say it twice, three times a charm. Happy he’s back from the dead, or should he stay buried in the ’80s?
