We’ve wanted a sequel to Pixar’s family superhero epic The Incredibles for seven years, but nothing’s materialized. Now writer/director Brad Bird says he’d love to make one for us, but if he does, it’s not just going to be another sequel for the sake of massive profit.
In an interview with Movies.com ahead of the release of his new flick Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Bird said a big part of the reason we haven’t seen an Incredibles 2 just yet is that he’s simply been busy with other things (directing Tom Cruise, for example):
“To say that I’ve had trouble [coming up with a story] is to say that [a sequel] has been my pursuit. … I haven’t really been pursuing that.”
It’s not as if there hasn’t been demand for a return to Pixar’s superhero family, but Bird said he resists the idea of making one just because he’s been asked to. It’s his baby, and if he does it, he wants to do it right:
“I think the reason it hasn’t [happened] yet is because the studio would like me to do it, if there were another Incredibles. … And I’ve told them that I’m not really friendly to have someone else take away my child. … I would like to think that I have several good ideas that could be incorporated into a next Incredibles, but I don’t have a whole movie yet, and the last thing I want to do is do it just because it would open big, or something like that.”
So it won’t happen until it’s good enough to happen. But what does good enough mean? What’s the standard Bird is holding himself to that he’ll have to meet for us to see another Incredibles?
“I want to do it because I have something that will be as good or better than the original. … Toy Story 2 was, to me, a perfect sequel, because it absolutely respected the first film but found new places to go without selling out its characters. So if I could come up with an idea that is to Incredibles that Toy Story 2 is to Toy Story, I would do it in a second.”
How long that will take nobody knows, but whenever Bird is ready, we’ll still be waiting for Mr. and Mrs. Incredible, Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack to return to crime-fighting glory.
