J.J. Abrams and Eric Kripke’s it’s-the-end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it sci-fi series Revolution is picking up steam: They’ve just nabbed Cowboys and Aliens’ Jon Favreau to direct the pilot, the first drama pilot he’s ever shot.

In this epic adventure thriller, a family struggles to reunite in a post-apocalyptic American landscape: a world of empty cities, local militias and heroic freedom fighters, where every single piece of technology—computers, planes, cars, phones, even lights—has mysteriously blacked out … forever.
Favreau’s great strength as a director isn’t story, it’s character. What made his Iron Man movies click (when they clicked) was that he encouraged his actors, allowed them room to work and find their stride—all while managing the spectacle of giant special effects. And that sensibility will be necessary on a show like this, which is—like The Walking Dead—all about the people, not the plague.
Abrams, Favreau and Kripke, together … it’s like all the football players being put on the same dodgeball team. Almost not fair.
