Look out, Matt Smith! Someone is vying for your gig as the Doctor in the long-running and beloved sci-fi series Doctor Who. And that someone is Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren.
There are some, John Barrowman, for example, who think that after 11 regenerations and almost 50 years, the next Doctor should be a woman—and then there are those Whovians who’d call the whole idea a heresy.
Still, Helen Mirren is more than willing to step into the famous Time Lord’s shoes, having recently been quoted by the Daily Star as saying:
“I would like to play the new female Doctor Who. I don’t want to just be his sidekick.”
But why not be a companion, Dame Helen?
After all, there will be an opening in the TARDIS next year, as current Who companions Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill)—who are also widely (and lovingly) known as ”the Ponds”—are set to be leaving our good Doctor in a ”heartbreaking end.” (Showrunner Steven Moffat’s exact words, not ours.)
But is Matt Smith ready to leave his job to the woman who got her Oscar by playing Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen? (A fantastic performance, by the way, and she showed she could kick ass in Red.) Who knows! But, oddly enough, the actor recently listed the legendary actress as someone he’d love to see on the show:
‘Helen Mirren would be great in Doctor Who. Also Eric Cantona and Vincent Cassel—he would be number one actually.”
What do you guys think?
