That’s a lot of pigs in space.

Angry Birds Space, the latest addition to the wildly popular Angry Birds franchise, has topped 10 million downloads in just three days. Game maker Rovio announced the milestone on its Twitter feed this morning.

The game was released last Thursday for iOS and Android devices, as well as Macs and PCs, with one of the biggest, and probably most expensive, promotional campaigns for a mobile game ever seen. And it seems to have paid off – just hours after its release, the new Angry Birds title was already at the top of Apple’s App Store charts in nearly 30 countries.

Shooting to the No. 1 paid and No. 1 top grossing app for both the iPhone and iPad, the game knocked out other popular apps like the Pictionary-like game Draw Something and Apple’s own iPhoto. Angry Birds Space has garnered rave reviews, including an Editor’s Choice award from PCMag.com.

It brings the barreling birds and sinister pigs that gamers know and love into a new universe with totally different physics than the previous Angry Birds lineup. Gamers are transported to outer space, where the birds travel in straight lines, not parabolic arcs in other games. Only when they are in the presence of “gravitational fields” are the birds affected by gravity, creating looping trajectories that add complexity to the game. The Angry Birds cast of birds has also been revamped, giving them new abilities.

iPhone users can get the Angry Birds Space in the App Store for $0.99, while those with an iPad will have to shell out $2.99 for a Retina-ready “HD” version. A $0.99 version and a free, ad-supported version are also available in the Android Marketplace for mobile devices running Google’s Android OS. A special Android tablet-optimized version also costs $2.99.

The game can also be found in the Amazon Appstore, where three versions are available—a free, ad-supported version, a $0.99 paid app, and a $2.99 Kindle Fire app. A $4.99 version of the game is also available for PCs and Macs.

Plus, the game will eventually come to Windows Phone, Rovio’s chief executive said last week.
