Ever since we heard the exciting news that X-Men: First Class was officially getting its sequel—and that Matthew Vaughn would be back in the director’s chair—we’ve been psyched thinking about the many, many possibilities the sequel will without a doubt bring.
Those include (among others) questions over which favorite X-Man could make Xavier’s (James McAvoy) team next. More specifically, we wanna know if Scott Summers (aka Cyclops) and Jean Grey (aka Marvel Girl aka Phoenix) will be in the sequel. The two of them are, after all, original X-Men team members along with Iceman, Angel and Beast.
Scott and Jean’s absence from First Class was somewhat of a sore point with fans—especially since First Class introduced us to a bunch of previously unknown mutants as well as Scott’s younger brother, Alex Summers (Lucas Till), aka Havok, before they introduced Scott—as only Beast (Nicholas Hoult), from the original X-Men team, made his furry appearance in the film.
The question was put to writer Jane Goldman, who worked on the screenplay for X-Men: First Class, by Film School Rejects.
(Note that Goldman isn’t officially attached to the sequel … yet. But since she worked on the first film, as well as on director Matthew Vaughn’s previous two outings, Kick-Ass and Stardust, it’s almost a given that she’ll be on board the X-sequel.)
This is what Goldman said (about Cyclops and Jean Grey being in the X-Men: First Class sequel):
You know, I can always make suggestions, and I did last time. Ultimately, those decisions come down to someone other than me. Would I, personally? Well, it’s really tricky. I think the route we had gone down with First Class—it’s sort of a question of where to go next, and I think those two characters were very strong, especially having [Michael] Fassbender and [James] McAvoy play them so brilliantly. In a comic sense, I still think there’s room for an X-Men [film] with the original X-Men [Laughs]. In terms of how they fit in this new universe that First Class kicked off, I don’t know. I mean, yes, I think there’s room for that. All sorts of ideas have been talked about and Matthew has some particular ideas, and, in this case, all of those decisions will be done through Matthew.
What do you guys think? Do you believe Matthew Vaughn and the writers will (re)introduce us to Scott Summers and Jean Grey in the First Class sequel (which is likely to take place in the ’70s, by the way)? More importantly, do you want them to make the X-team?
