Someone wants another shot at the Doctor (Matt Smith) on Doctor Who. No, no, not at being the Doctor, but at making life for our beloved Time Lord completely and utterly miserable again. (And that’s the way we like it, yes?) And guess who-in-the-name-of-Gallifrey is that dastardly villain?
Yeah, you all know who it is: It’s the Master himself, played by actor John Simm.
Two days ago, Simm (Life on Mars) took to Twitter and told fans and followers that he would love to come back to Doctor Who as the Master, after he was asked if he’d contemplate a return to the sci-fi series in the role.
The 41-year-old actor tweeted, “Of course! Mr Moffat is a brilliant writer.”
The last time we saw the insane Master was during the “year of the specials” back in 2009, when John Simm’s unhinged Time Lord returned from the dead to see David Tennant off as the 10th Doctor in “The End of Time” parts 1 and 2.
In an act that surprised many—not least the Doctor himself (and the fans)—the Master saved his longtime enemy by attacking Rassilon (James Bond’s Timothy Dalton) with his electric power and trapping himself in the process—seemingly forever—in the locked Time War, along with Rassilon.
Although it would appear that the Master is lost forever—along with Gallifrey and all of the Time Lords—we all know that Who showrunner Steven Moffat could easily come up with a brillant wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey gimmick to bring back the Doctor’s most iconic and enduring villain.
And as for those who didn’t like John Simm’s portrayal of the renegade Time Lord, Simm had this to say: “For those grown ups ANGRY about how the Master was written/portrayed … please don’t tell me, tell someone who gives a ****. Therapist!? …or (to avoid confusion) perhaps a psychiatrist? That’s cleared that up!”
What do you think? Do you think John Simm should return as the Master on Doctor Who and get a chance to have a first epic face-off against Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor? (The 50th anniversary is coming up in 2013, after all.) Should he stay locked away in the Time War for ever? Or, if he comes back, should he be recast?
