Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn has been pitching a dream adaptation of Wonder Woman over the past year, and he may get his chance—but only if his current production of Logan’s Run is successful.
“I would love to make Wonder Woman,” he said. “And I also think that Christina Hendricks would be the perfect Wonder Woman, but Warner Bros. haven’t called yet. But I’m getting closer with Logan’s Run. I think someone said to me in a meeting that if I get Logan’s Run right, then I’ll get Wonder Woman.”
Logan’s Run has been a tumultuous project almost as much as the Wonder Woman movie. Bryan Singer was once supposed to direct the film when he put it aside to focus on 2006’s Superman Returns. Then Carl Rinsch jumped in to direct the film, only to have a scheduling conflict prohibit him from being able to commit. That’s when Nicolas Winding Refn jumped in, bringing his Drive star, Ryan Gosling, along for the ride.
Wonder Woman has not had much luck getting made. Not only did the recent NBC series not make it to pilot, but even Joss Whedon (now directing The Avengers) couldn’t get a movie off the ground.
The original Logan’s Run, based on the book by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson, takes place in a future society where everyone must die at the age of 30. Michael York starred as Logan, a Sandman, whose job it is to execute those “runners” who do not voluntarily turn themselves in on their 30th birthdays. But Logan himself goes on the run in search of a mythical hideaway called Sanctuary. The age limit in the original novel was 21, and Silver has said that the new film will revert back to that.
Refn said back in January that even though Wonder Woman is his future plan, Logan’s Run is still very much worth the effort “because the plot machinery of the original was so strong. The premise of a society that decides to commit suicide is unique, and I think that’s why everyone still thinks it could work.”
So do you think Refn can pull off a remake of Logan’s Run? Better yet, can he make it so good that Warner Bros. executives will hand him the keys to Wonder Woman?
