If you thought the Scream franchise was dead following the underwhelming box-office return of Scream 4, then you may be wrong. Wes Craven himself says Scream 5 is gonna happen.
That’s what the big time horror film director revealed in a phone interview with MovieWeb while Craven was in the midst of promoting the 10/4 home video release of Scream 4:
“Yes. The odds are that there will be (a Scream 5). It is something that Bob Weinstein wants to do. He tends to do what he wants to do. So I am inclined to think that there will be (another sequel). Whether I will be a part of it or not? I don’t know. My contract gives me the first look. If they show me something that is really wonderful? Of course I will be a part of it.”
While Scream 4’s performance pales in comparison to the original Scream’s box office (back in ’96, it took down $161 million worldwide), if you look at the numbers, Scream 4—which was touted as being the first in a new trilogy—brought in $97 million worldwide … which ain’t that bad. What’s more, it went a long way toward reinvigorating a stale franchise.
And where does Craven think a fifth Scream movie could be heading—following the somewhat open-ended and ambiguous ending of Scream 4?
“I’d have to kill you if I told you. It’s better to have an ending where you can’t tell where it’s going to go next, than to have an ending where you go, ‘Oh, that is the hook for the sequel. That is the hook for the next one.’ We felt it was better to let the audience speculate than to have all of these clues placed in their lap. It’s not a matter of not being smart enough (to figure out how 4 ties into 5). We’re clever at this. Let’s just put it that way.”
So, we guess we’ll all get to see Ghost Face slash his way to more victims once again. Are you excited at the prospect, or does it make you want to ”scream”?
