Looks like his buddy Richard Clark had been led up the garden path a little: Brian Kirk hasn’t locked down the directing gig on Thor 2.
Instead, Marvel are looking at other candidates. Out in front, it would seem, is Patty Jenkins.
Jenkins made a splash in 2003 with Monster, her Aileen Wurnos biopic which won an Oscar for Charlize Theron. Since then, she’s been working on a smaller scale, or at least screen, with episodes of Entourage and Arrested Development plus the pilot of The Killing building up her resume.
If Jenkins signs on for Thor 2 – and The Hollywood Reporter seem to be the most reserved source out there right now, saying she’s yet to start contract negotiations – she’ll be the first female director to take charge of a picture in the Marvel Movieverse.
So this would at least look to be a step towards balance behind the camera – how about in front of it?
Here’s hoping that appearances of Black Widow, Maria Hill and whichever SHIELD agent Amanda Righetti is playing in The Avengers are the start of something, and we’ll also be seeing some Marvel superheroines getting their own movies along the line too.
Of course, it would help if there were actually more female title-characters in the comics to start off with.
