Star Trek Online will relaunch as a free-to-play game early next year.

Originally scheduled for this year, the title will make the transition on January 17, 2012.

Current monthly subscribers will receive 400 free Cryptic Points each month.

The first payments will take place early in December as a thank you to loyal customers.

The massively-multiplayer title, which launched in early 2010, allows players to become either a Captain of a Federation starship or a Klingon Warlord.

As well as unexplored star systems, Star Trek Online also features a number of iconic locations from the Star Trek universe.
