Rumors have been swirling ever since Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson dropped a hint via Twitter that he could take up the mantle of a DC comics character sometime soon. Now we may know who it is.
According to Bleeding Cool, a tipster overheard the Rock at a party bragging about his new role as the DC antihero Lobo, an interstellar gun-for-hire that had a very popular run in the 1990s.
It follows up on the Rock’s recent Twitter post to a fan, where he responded “Funny U say that” when someone asked if he might ever play a DC hero.
Flimsy? Sure. But it does make a bit of sense.
We already know a Lobo film is in the works, penned by Journey 2: The Mysterious Island writer Brad Peyton (a film that also starred the Rock — hmm …), so it’s only natural they would be reaching out for a leading man.
As for the character, the Rock actually does fit the mold well enough—but he’d definitely need to get back to his action roots to make it work.
The character of Lobo was created by Keith Giffen and Roger Slifer in 1983. The character is like a weird mix of Deadpool, The Punisher and Wolverine—so if it’s done right, this could rock. But Peyton’s pedigree as a cheese peddler is a bit troubling.
What do you think? Would you like to see the Rock as Lobo?
