Up front: Don’t get too excited because it’s only The Phantom Menace… though, on the other hand, this could be a sign of the way things are going to work across the whole series.
Last year, Panasonic gave away copies of the Star Wars saga on Blu-ray for folks who picked up their home theater kit. This year, they’re going to be expanding this into the third dimension by bundling the new, dimensionalised Phantom Menace.
While the quote sources say that the deal could start as soon as the spring, Tech Radar speculate that it’s more likely to be September. I guess that’s peak time for this kind of hardware launch, in the run up to Christmas?
Though nothing was ever official, many were expecting we’d see all of the prequels in cinemas, if not the whole six-film string, before any were released on disc.
Now, if this Panasonic deal continues as Lucasfilm re-release a film per year, that should mean Star Wars on 3D Blu-ray in 2015, Empire in ’16 and Jedi in ’17. Of course, they’ll each also be in cinemas earlier in that same year.
And it could get expensive, having to buy a new Blu-ray player just to get hands-on with each of the films.
