Did you think Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 wouldn’t crush every previous record in sight? Because it did. Tuesday’s Modern Warfare 3 launch was so large, Activision managed to sell 9.3 million copies across four platforms — shattering last year’s day one sales Black Ops by 2.3 million. FPS fever is still alive!

Statistically, Activision’s been able to successfully increase its sales for the Call of Duty franchise every year. 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 sold 6 million, followed by 2010’s Black Ops with 7 million and now Modern Warfare 3 is the king with 9.3 million. Activision says that 1.5 million people lined up at midnight around the world to get their Modern Warfare 3 on.

Xbox 360 leads the pack with 54 percent of the games sold, PS3 with 42 percent and PC and Wii have the remaining four percent.

Put into perspective, Call of Duty’s arch nemesis — EA’s Battlefield 3 — sold 5 million copies across Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in a week. Impressive as that sounds, early predictions by analysts are putting Modern Warfare 3’s first week sales at 12-13.5 million.

Sure, Battlefield 3 might be EA’s biggest launch game ever, but Modern Warfare 3 still eclipses it in sales. Man, since when did video game sales become so nuts? I remember when just selling a million on launch day was considered a super success.

For the sake of debate, tell us, which game is better? Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3 and why you think so in the comments below. Yeah, we’re opening that can of worms.
