We knew Torchwood’s Captain Jack Harkness was a self-sacrificing, heroic man (he’s immortal in the series, after all) but it also seems that the man portraying him, actor John Barrowman, is as much 100% hero as is his TV counterpart (minus the immortality, of course).
According to Wales Online Barrowman, who was staying at the Scottish city’s Radisson Blu hotel while currently playing the role of Robinson Crusoe in a Glasgow pantomime, and who was returning with his parents from a concert in Newcastle, dragged a fleeing teen to the ground in order to subdue him.
The teen had just been ransacking a couple’s room in the early hours of Thursday and a hotel worker was punched.
This is John Barrowman’s account of the event:
The concierge was trying to sort my air conditioning. We heard this woman scream and shout, ‘Stop him, stop him.’ We saw this young boy running down the hallway. I told the concierge to chase him and called the hotel operator and told them to block the staircase so we could get him. The lad had tried to get away through the staff elevator and punched the concierge. I grabbed the kid’s ankles, yanked him to the ground and then pulled him out into the hallway. I pinned him down. My tour manager then arrived and the three of us held him down until the police came.
According to the story, a second thief escaped but police are actively looking for him through CCTV.
The story doesn’t end there though. Barrowman (big softie kind hearted man that he is) added that he’d like to offer the teen a backstage job in his panto:
It was sad.He was only 14 or 15. I think he was on drugs. But I’d like to find out the boy’s story and give him a second chance. Maybe he could work in the pantomime over Christmas to give him a sense of responsibility.
