In 1984, during the height of popularity of “Weird Al” Yankovic’s smash hit parody “Eat It”, Al did something inexplicable. He hosted the ABC television network’s Saturday Morning Cartoon Preview Special, which was filmed at historic theme park Knott’s Berry Farm, accompanied by mascot-costumed versions of Scooby and Scrappy Doo. You can’t get much more 1980’s than that, unless I also mention that the special had appearances by sitcom child actor Missy Gold, radio DJ Wolfman Jack, and a ‘dancing’ robot named Orby. To truly deconstruct this lost but now found oddity of pop culture, we have Knott’s Berry Farm employee and historian, content creator David “Doggans” Gansalle, and one of the biggest Weird Al fanatics I’ve ever known, Tony Goldmark of “Escape From Vault Disney”. Tony also provided us with some mid-80’s rarities by Weird Al for our Comedy Music Time segment, and I read a bunch of listener comments that I may or may not have missed from the past. So strap in you zany funsters, because we’re about to review one of the strangest broadcasts ever to air immediately before an episode of “Webster”.
