Dragon Con’s Night at the Georgia Aquarium: Is It Worth It?

by Jen “Lil’ Bit” Schleusner

Each year, one of the most unique off-site events during Dragon Con weekend is the Night at the Georgia Aquarium party. This Saturday night event offers a rare opportunity to explore the world-famous Georgia Aquarium after dark — all while surrounded by fellow fans in themed costumes. But is it worth stepping away from the main con footprint? And is the VIP level price tag justified? After attending several times over the years, here’s my take.

General Admission vs. VIP Experience

I’ve attended this event five times — twice with general admission tickets and three times as a VIP. Every attendee gains access to many of the open exhibits, where you can visit the playful otters, the expressive beluga whales, and even spot albino alligators gliding under the lights. Some sections rotate availability, so each visit feels a little different.

VIP guests, however, receive an entirely elevated experience. A spacious private ballroom offers multiple bars with short lines, a dance floor, elegant décor, and even private viewing windows into both the massive Ocean Voyager gallery and the beluga habitat. The ticket includes both a generous buffet and roaming servers with delicious finger foods — making it a true all-inclusive evening. For me, the VIP upgrade is well worth it for the comfort, atmosphere, and ease alone.

New Exhibits and Behind-the-Scenes Moments

One of the perks of not attending every single year is that there’s usually something new to see. This year, I discovered an alligator exhibit featuring at least two albino alligators — a highlight I don’t recall from past visits. Another surprise was a behind-the-scenes peek into the top of the Ocean Voyager tank, a breathtaking space that looks nearly as large as an Olympic swimming pool (if not bigger!)

Atmosphere, Costumes, and Convenience

Part of the magic of the evening is the atmosphere. Themed costumes are always a delight — creative, hilarious, and often exquisitely made. There’s nothing quite like dancing alongside a school of sharks while standing next to groups filled with Tina’s, Zissou’s crew, Angler Fish and more.

Logistically, getting there is simple. The Dragon Con shuttles are efficient and run frequently. This year, we opted for a Lyft ride back for convenience, but both options work well.

Final Thoughts: Worth It?

If you’re looking for a unique break from the con crowds, a chance to enjoy breathtaking sea life, and a beautifully organized party, the Night at the Aquarium is absolutely worth experiencing — especially at least once as a VIP. Between the exclusive views, high-quality food, and lively ambiance, it’s a standout Dragon Con memory.
