Spielberg reveals how Robopocalypse will be like Minority Report

Don’t let War Horse fool you—Steven Spielberg hasn’t forgotten his sci-fi roots. Once he wraps production on his Lincoln biopic, his sights are set on Robopocalypse!

Robopocalypse will be a sci-fi flick based on the best-selling novel by Daniel H. Wilson. Like most futuristic films, it will center on technology that wears out its welcome

Spielberg recently told Time Out London (via The Playlist), “It’s a movie about a global war between man and machine. I had a great time creating the future on Minority Report, and it’s a future that is coming true faster than any of us thought it would.” He added that “it’ll be another future we can relate to.”

Speaking of future, the Robopocalypse timeline isn’t that far from our own. According to Spielberg it “takes place in 15 or 20 years.” That’s nothing compared to Minority Report’s 2054/55 setting or A.I., which took place in the 22nd century. Robopocalypse will hit closer to home.

The director also opened up about the film’s story.

He says, “It’s about the consequences of creating technologies which make our lives easier, and what happens when that technology becomes smarter than we are. It’s not the newest theme, it’s been done throughout science fiction, but it’s a theme that becomes more relevant every year.”

Where have we heard that before?

Robopocalypse is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2013.
